Water Supply to Northern-East and Eastern Cities of
Urumia Lake region
Summarized Project Outline

1. Objective

The main objective of this project is to provide, treat, transfer and supply potable water to Tabriz City and also other cities such as Marand, Soufian, Shabestar, Tasouj, Aras free zone … and other rural areas along the pipeline route. The destination year of water supply is 2046.

2. Project Layout

The Project includes water intake, pump stations, water treatment plants, reservoirs, and pipelines.

Water intake is located at Golfaraj region in E-Azarbaijan province at N-W side Jolfa City and a distance of 0.700km from it towards Aras Dam, in the vicinity of the local radio station at elevation of about 710m above sea level. A sedimentation basin and the first pump house will be located in front of water intake within a farming unsmooth land which to be leveled and prepared for construction.

The main Pipeline Route starts from the first pump station and move ahead along the high voltage power lines towards Gharebolaghe Village then at vicinity of Dounedaghe heights and in front of Yekan-Saadi Village it turns towards Marand City and Piresaghe Village and enters balancing reservoir at 1555m above sea level. From water intake up to the balancing reservoir there are totally six of pump stations which provide required pressure for transferring water to the relevant elevation. From that point, pipeline route pass neighboring Zaal Vilage and crossing Marand-Jolfa road then enters balancing reservoir at 1520m above sea level. From that point, pipline proceeds along Tabriz- Marand main road and ahead of Marand City it turns towards New Bonab City and passes through a tunnel up to Shourderagh village and then proceeds to Soufian- Tabriz main road and after crossing the road, it will be extended along Soufian- Marand road up to Soufian City, then cross Soufian-Tasouj road and keep on along existing service road of gas pipeline towards Tabriz City up to the Tabriz Airport, then after crossing Tabriz to Soufian road, it extends to the Northern-east reservoir at the highlands overlook Tabriz Airport.

Considering the reliable existing surface and ground water resource of the region, the amount of water demand that shall be covered by this project should be 240mcm/y treated water or 244mcm/yr raw water.

5. Water Resource

The water resource of this project is Aras River Water Intake that is located near Radio Station at elevation of 710m above sea level at the North-West of Jolfa City in E-Azerbaijan Province.

6. Water Treatment Plant

Raw water will be pumped through six successive pump stations to the balancing reservoir plus a distinct pump station up to the tunnel inlet from which flows through the tunnel and enters water treatment plant located downstream of tunnel outlet near to Shourderaghe Village, which consists of Centrifloc Clarifiers, Centrifuge mechanical dewatering and related accessories.

According to the maximum water allocation of 6.6m3/sec, the process of water treatment is divided into two modules. Each module has a capacity of
3.3m3/sec treated water outflow.

7. Pipeline and Service Road

The main pipeline route started from water intake pumping station No.(1), and considering total route of pipeline, its overall length is about 139km which consists of 5.5km tunnel plus 133.5km pipeline.

Size of main pipes is DN2000 made of carbon steel at grades St44-II with relevant thickness of 15.88mm.

Specification of main pipes is mentioned in following table:

All steel pipes of all 12 sections should be cement mortar lined. All pipes of all sections should be coal tar enamel medium grade coated. Total length of pipeline should equipped by Cathodic Protection system.

8. Service Road

The pipeline route is mostly accessible throughout its length via a suitable service road of Golfaraj Project however the remaining its length is also located along existing access roads therefore only small parts of the route will need service road construction.

9. Reservoirs and Pumping Stations

Due to static elevation difference of 855 m between water level of water intake and highest point of main pipeline route, 7 pumping stations with relevant rated head have been considered. From the highest reservoir down to the water treatment plant, there is one midway balancing reservoir. Water will flow straight from water treatment plant up to the storage reservoir in Tabriz City.
Complete working conditions of reservoirs are shown in following table.

10. Required Power

Amount of required electrical power for this project is estimated to be98.5mw for main pipeline pump stations. Required power for final water treatment plant will be 1565kw.

11. Control & Telemetry

Main control room will be located at final treatment plant. All necessary apparatuses and instrumentation for control, monitoring and telemetry system for water pipeline elements and equipment will be provided in order to keep convenient and better operation of system in safe mode. Control and monitoring of hydraulic data such as flow rate, pressure, level and power actuator situation and interlock, collecting required data analyzing and finally commanding is the main aim of this system. Data transferring system will be through optical fiber.
